Bound set apostille: when you have multiple documents and need them legalised together
Five documents. One overseas application. Each one needs an apostille. That is five solicitor certifications, five FCDO submissions and five fees - unless the receiving authority will accept a bound set. A bound set apostille is a single apostille covering multiple documents that have been physically bound together as one certified package. It is not always the right approach, but when it works, it saves time and money.
How it works
A UK solicitor or Notary Public gathers the documents, certifies them as a set, and physically binds them together. Their certification statement, wet-ink signature and official stamp cover the entire bundle as a single unit. The FCDO then authenticates the solicitor's signature and attaches one apostille to the bound package. That apostille covers every document in the set. The physical paper apostille is attached to the back of the entire bound package.
When it makes sense
A bound set works well when a foreign authority has requested a package of documents to be submitted together, when a company is submitting several corporate documents for a single overseas transaction, or when a solicitor is certifying a collection of supporting documents for one application. The key condition is that the receiving authority must accept a bound set rather than requiring individual apostilles on each document.
When it does not work
Once documents are bound and apostilled as a set, they cannot be separated without invalidating the apostille. If a foreign authority needs to retain one document from the set permanently, or if different documents are going to different recipients, individual apostilles are the only option. The UAE does not accept bundled apostilles under any circumstances - every document submitted for UAE Embassy attestation must carry its own individual apostille.
Paper apostille only
A bound set is a physical package of documents bound together. The e-Apostille service is not available for bound sets. Only the paper apostille route applies. Standard FCDO processing takes approximately ten working days at £45 per apostille - but because a bound set carries one apostille rather than several, the FCDO fee applies once rather than per document.
