Important Note
Legalisation requirements are subject to change and may vary by country. Consult the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s Legalisation Office or a professional legalisation service for the most current information and specific guidance regarding your documents This guide provides all the useful information you need on document legalisation in the UK, in one place.
The first step is to obtain the original document that needs to be Apostilled. This could be a birth certificate, marriage certificate, diploma, or any other public document.
Not all documents are eligible for an Apostille. The FCDO website provides a list of documents that can and cannot be Apostilled.
Before an Apostille can be issued, the document must be certified by a relevant authority, such as a solicitor, notary public or government office. The certification will verify that the document is genuine and the signature on the document is authentic.
Once the document has been certified, it can be submitted to the FCDO for Apostille processing. The FCDO offers both standard and premium service options, with the standard service taking up to 5 working days and the premium service taking up to 1 working day.
Once the FCDO has issued the Apostille, it will be attached to the original document and returned to the applicant via post.
